Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is also known as "ice therapy". It is best applied by 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off to allow the area to return to body tempurature; then 20 minutes on once again. This 1 hour slot can be done 2 - 3 times per day for 2 - 3 days; especially upon a new injury.

Caution - If ice is applied for over 30 minutes, the body then expands blood vessels to send blood to the injured area, as a defence, thinking it will be frost bitten. The on/off pumping method is safe and effective.

If you are suffering from a muscle spasm or just recently had a soft tissue injury, cryotherapy is an excellent way to help reduce swelling in the early stages of your healing process. This therapy is rather inexpensive and is something that can be done at home as well as in the office.
